In the March of 1953, the provincial government approved by the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs to consult report on the withdrawal of Hubei Provincial People&g;s Science Museum, founded Hubei Provincial Museum Preparatory Office; Provincial Museum Preparatory Office was in the leadership by Provincial Cultural Bureau. Chen Guo Zhao was chief of Department of Cultural Affairs and Social Liberal chief and Li Zhen Fan was the deputy director.

In the September of 1953, the provincial government led by the Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee and Provincial Cultural Relics Trustees led by Provincial Committee United Front Work Department were merged to be Hubei Research Institute of Culture. Office address was temporarily located in Provincial Preparation Office which was in Wuchang Shuilu Street.

In the April of 1954, the provincial government decided to resume the Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee, under the leadership of the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs, co-located with the Provincial Museum Preparatory Office.

In the spring of 1957, the establishment of the CPC Hubei Provincial Museum branch.

In February of 1958, the Hubei Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee changed its name to Hubei Provincial Cultural Relics Management Office, office address was within the Wuchang Yao Jialing Agricultural Exhibition.

In the spring of 1959, the Museum preparatory office relocation to Wuchang East Lake Scenic Area; the provincial government allocated funding for the construction of exhibition of Provincial Museum.

In the Autumn of 1960, former Vice President Comrade Tung Pi-wu wrote the name of Hubei Provincial Museum.

In January of 1963, approved by the Provincial Cultural Bureau party group, the Preparatory Office and the Provincial Cultural Relics Administration were merged to officially change its name to Hubei Provincial Museum.

In 1981, the Wuchang Revolution Memorial Museum was separated from the province to become an independent cultural organization.

In 1989, approved by the higher authorities, the Archaeology department and paper management department were separated from the museum to set up an independent Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology.

In 2002, Hubei Provincial Museum and Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology merged.
